Benue State Gubernatorial Aspirant Resigns From The Civil Service Ahead 2019 Election

BEING A PRESS BRIEFING BY CHIEF. DR. STEPHEN TERUNGWA HWANDE, A GUBERNATORIAL ASPIRANT UNDER THE PEOPLE’S DEMOCRATIC PARTY (PDP) ON THIS DAY, MONDAY 30TH JULY 2018.

Gentlemen of the Press,
Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen.

I wish to thank you for the privilege to address you this morning in order to unveil my mission to salvage Benue state. I am confident that through your availing professional obligation, my message will be extended to the general public.

Firstly, I wish to thank the Almighty God for His Mercies, favours, perfection, guidance and protection of our collective destiny which has endured great tribulations and difficult circumstances. Today, there is every need to celebrate our survival by returning generous praises to Him.

After extensive consultation with Major stake holders in our society including, Elders, religious, traditional and political opinion leaders, civil servants, youths, women, students, and organized groups too numerous to mention here, I have tendered a letter of resignation to the management of Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Makurdi, where I worked as a consultant gynaecologist and this marks my officially disengagement from the Civil Service. This was to enable me heed to the clarion call by the above mentioned stake holders, to take a shot at the 2019 Gubernatorial Election in Benue State. This is with a view to offering a new dimension in service for legacies where we shall restore and entrench a culture of selflessness and patriotism.

As you know, leadership aspirations are inspired by genuine motives for service stewardship and the passion for patriotic obligations for nation building. For this reason, it evolves through the democratic process and must be driven by accountability and responsibility of purpose. I humbly offer to be a professional servant in promoting popular governance with mass participating engagements that will yield sustainable legacies.

Gentlemen of the Press, for almost two years, I have traversed the nooks and corners of our dear state in consultation with nearly all critical stakeholders and communities across the state. My findings have shown that, Benue is backward and underdeveloped. The rural communities are worse hit with agricultural production processes still at crude and archaic levels. It is almost impossible to connect one rural community with another due largely to poor road networks and in some cases, no roads at all. There are hardly any health facilities in these communities to take care of the health needs of our rural dwellers with high rates of maternal and child mortality. Children are still attending classes in thatched round huts as a result of dilapidated or non-existent structures. Most of these communities lack basic water supply and are not connected to electricity. Communal clashes and intra and inter tribal and community wars have become the order of the day.

It is the general view of the masses that, there must be a radical departure from the clutches of underdevelopment and anarchy; hostilities and warfare; looting and mismanagement; thuggery and violence, which are the consequence of an overwhelming consuming population that is not functionally engaged and denied participation. There is evidence that, the percentage of the productive working population is far below average when compared with the consuming population.

Therefore, our new task is to strengthen planning for structural expansion, institutional and policy reforms and programmes to accommodate more people in productive sectors of the Benue economy.

As we march towards modernity, redemption, recovery and restoration and rehabilitation are key concepts in our roadmap, going forward.

Following the above and especially that ours is a people oriented project, this vision is built on the appellation “Benue Arise” with a focus on a greater and more prosperous Benue in the years to come.

I therefore wish to use this medium to call on my supporters and party faithful to remain calm and continue to work towards the actualization of our collective dreams.

Thank you.
